UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION FILM FESTIVAL
In collaboration with the UNAFF in Libraries Program (United Nations Association Film Festival), these award-winning films span the world and touch on many of our Silicon Valley Reads topics for 2021. Each Wednesday evening we will offer a live, virtual film discussion with a film representative. We will provide the link to each movie for a week prior to the discussion.

Set against the backdrop of the physician shortage and opioid epidemic in rural America, Providers follows three healthcare providers in northern New Mexico who work together to connect those who need help, regardless of their ability to pay. Playing for Change: Peace Through Music (82 minutes) This is a feature-length documentary that tells a story of hope, struggle, perseverance and joy. Kifaru is a feature-length documentary that follows the lives of two young, Kenyan recruits who join Ol Pejeta Conservancy's rhino caretaker unit—a small group of rangers that protect and care for Sudan, the last male northern white rhino in the world. (81 minutes) We are In the Field follows Manoj Gautam, a 26-year-old Nepalese man on a passionate quest to protect animals and wildlife from cruelty and extinction. Code Oakland examines the evolution of Oakland through the eyes of social entrepreneurs who are determined that youth of color not be left on the sidelines. (22 minutes). Barefoot is a documentary about a group of indigenous children from Mexico who have been gaining popularity because of their skills on the basketball court. The region that the children come from faces extreme poverty and political turmoil and the kids have found hope through their sport. Day One follows a group of teenage refugees from war-torn countries who are enrolled at a unique public school for refugees and immigrants-only in St. Louis, MO, where they are guided through an inspirational program of education, healing, and trauma intervention by devoted educators, some of whom have chosen to relocate to the inner city to support their students. (81 minutes) Rainbow Children: In a class presentation, 5-year-old Elika, with dual origins, wants to give her classmates the most truthful image of her mother's country, Iran.
